The School of Criminal Sciences is affiliated with UNIL’s Faculty of Law and Criminal Justice. Dating back to the legal photography courses taught at the beginning of the 20th Century by Prof. Archibald Rodolphe Reiss, it was the world’s first academic scientific police school and is still one of the few institutions in Europe to offer complete training in Forensic Science (from BSc to PhD).

Several areas in terms of person identification are investigated at the School of Criminal Sciences and numerous researches have been done in the field of fingerprints identification and in biometrics in general. The unit is funded since 2003 by US Department of Defence and the National Institute of Justice (2005-IJ-R-051, 2010-DN-BX-K267) on projects in relation to fingerprint statistics and sufficiency criteria.
